The Virtual Poetry Slam

The Slam

Words Beats and Life is excited to announce our third and final opportunity to qualify for a spot on the Words Beats & Life DMV Youth Poetry Slam Team. The 2017 Virtual Poetry Slam is an open submission video poetry competition. Submissions are open between April 1st and 15th to residents of the Greater Washington (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area ages 13-19. Applicants should be aware that making the WBL Youth Poetry Slam Team will require frequent travel to our headquarters in Columbia Heights, DC.

The RulesĀ

Each poet applicant is required to submit one video no longer than 3 minutes and 30 seconds in response to the quote provided. The poet should mention their name and age in the video or the video description for consideration. Poems will be posted onto the WBL website for community members to select up to three poems, evaluating creativity, performance, and incorporation of the theme. The top three poets will be invited to the Grand Slam Finals for a chance to win a spot on the WBL Slam Team, representing the DMV at the International Poetry Festival Brave New Voices in Berkeley.

The Theme

Maya Angelou wrote:

‘My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.”

We encourage participating poets to consider the quote and develop an original poem that may reflect such themes of kindness, identity, and perseverance.
