DeCipher is a weekly progressive Hip-Hop Radio Show that began as an attempt to create an intergenerational dialogue about the music, the movement and the message of hip-hop culture. For most of it’s history, DeCipher has been a 5-day a week radio show featuring some of the DMVs most amazing DJs, scholars and activists pushing the envelop of what hip-hop on the radio can sound like and what it can do in the world. Today, the show is a two hours long hip-hop show that airs on 89.3FM in Washington DC and online at www.wpfw.org on Saturdays from 10pm-midnight. It includes news segments, PSAs music, interviews and pre-recorded segments. This show is executive produced by WBL.
Today, the show has interns, an Executive Producer for the show and a collective of amazing thinkers, creators and DJs making the most of the time we have on the air. This partnership with WPFW, a terrestrial radio station, was rooted in our desire to use a democratized media space, to create the radio that most people want commercial radio to be. The show is often called progressive hip-hop, but the reality is it is a musical journey through music you know, never heard and forgot about. It includes interviews and PSAs intended to encourage you to be different in the world. Today there are 5 shows with roughly 15 people involved across the entire month.[/one-half]
