The Apprentice Program was initially designed to meet the needs of a select group of students who had been identified by the DCUAA instructors and staff as ‘exceptional’, in regards to their artistic talent, social/academic need, and overall potential. These apprentices reached above and beyond the traditional drop-in students’ achievements through their individual commitment to our programming. That commitment made it possible to foster skill-set mastery in a chosen area of performance or production, lay the groundwork for employment, and made the connection between the skill they were learning and the pursuit of a post-secondary for this specific set of engaged students. Today, the DCUAA is exclusively recruiting students who embody that same work ethic, and offer the full range of services Words Beats & Life, Inc. can provide to every apprentice enrolled in the Academy.
Through interactive classes in the four core elements of hip-hop, gender-based programming, our financial literacy incentive program called “Hustlenomics,” and our academic mentoring program called “College Material”, the Apprentice Program is geared to foster a new generation of innovative young people who see the value in education as both artists and scholars. Student Apprentice levels are determined based on a set of criteria related to their inherent potential, demonstrated need, and artistic abilities. Subsequent to their role, an apprentice is expected to participate in the full menu of program offerings of Words Beats & Life.
