For well over a decade, producer and instrumentalist Zachariah McGant has provided dexterous soundscapes for various musical outfits throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. As a young member of the Hip-Hop collective The Amphibians, McGant honed his production chops on various small scale demo projects. After the group disbanded amicably due to the untimely death of one of the collective’s leaders, McGant began to work as a soloist and embarked on a handful of collaborative projects.
Employing the MPC 2000 sampler workstation as his main instrument, McGant’s sound is best described as a melodic blend of soul, funk, jazz and Hip-hop. While McGant is a notable Hip Hop producer, his sound has been commissioned in a variety of backdrops. McGant provides production and live drum programming, a speciality of his, for two area bands. The Els, featuring the vocal talents of emcee Asheru, keyboardist Zo!, and bassist Mr. Hu and Op Swamp 81, featuring the superb vocalists Bilal Salaam and De’Nedra along with musician Dre King. McGant also supports area vocalist Muhsinah in this live drumming capacity, joining her on various nationwide spot dates on occasion.
McGant’s long list of collaborations doesn’t end there. He is a member of a duo known as the 1978ers, featuring emcee yU. The group is hard at work on a debut release with McGant overseeing yU’s solo projects, such as the critically acclaimed Before Taxes LP where he served as executive producer. McGant has earned production credits with the Washington Area trio Diamond District, Detroit MC Finale and Muhsinah’s upcoming release. McGant is also hard at work on a compilation album featuring a number of talented artists he’s met along his travels.
Although his production is hailed among many critics and listeners, McGant retains a strong sense of humility and grace. His involvement in the Washington Area music scene over the years lends him an encyclopedic knowledge of the scene’s vast pool of artists. McGant isn’t content with his achievements thus far and plans to continue creating and expanding his art to encompass all genres.
