Calling All Volunteers!
Volunteers are central to the work that WBL does. Our volunteers mentor and college/career coach our youth, assist with classes, help plan and work events and assist in the production of our journal; Words. Beats. Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture

We look to volunteers to increase our capacity to facilitate community and individual transformation. Your time, skill, networks, community, and commitment to hip-hop work are all valuable assets to us. If you would like to volunteer with us, plan on attending one of our monthly orientation sessions. Community Planning Committee
Volunteers on the Community Planning Committee enhance the teach-in through various roles and responsibilities, such as moderating panels and/or leading workshops, outreach, drafting questions for teach-in presenters to guide workshops, etc. Most importantly, the planning committee offers invaluable insight into what the local community of hip-hop artists, activists, educators, organizations, scholars and those engaged in hip-hop related programs are seeking from WBL’s international teach-ins. As we move to a teach-in format that encompasses the voices of the hip-hop community from across the globe and proposes models that can be applied LOCALLY, it is of the utmost importance to us to have a strong Community Planning Committee. Members of this committee should be in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area or able to commute for periodic planning meetings between March-June 2010.
Remix Awards Committee
This year’s Remix Award Committee has been selected by Words Beats & Life to nominate candidates for Remix Awards based on their expertise in a field related to hip-hop, including scholarship, organizational experience, connection to the international hip-hop community, practice in a hip-hop related discipline and/or foundation and government knowledge. The members of our distinguished Remix Award Committee for 2010 are: Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson (Assistant Professor, UCSB), Clyde Valentin (Executive Director, Hip-Hop Theater Junction), James Kass (Executive Director, Youth Speaks), Dr. Joe Schloss (Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at New York University), Toki Wright (Program Coordinator, Hip Hop, McNally Smith College of Music, recording artist), Ariel Fernandez Diaz (activist, writer, lecturer, filmmaker), Mazi Mutafa (Executive Director, Words Beats & Life), Asad Jafri (Director of Arts & Culture, IMAN), Michael Cirelli (Executive Director, Urban Word NYC), Che Kothari (photographer/cultural and community instigator, Founding Director, The Manifesto), Simone Jacobson (Cipher Director, Words Beats & Life) and Magee McIlvaine (filmmaker, lecturer, Nomadic Wax & Sol Productions).
Event Staff
Event Staff Volunteers help to check-in teach-in attendees, ensuring that all attendees have the appropriate teach-in badges. By participating as event staff, you help Words Beats & Life to guarantee a pleasant experience for all presenters, attendees, youth and media present.
